The early conferencing services solution

Before the online seminar web conference, conference calls up through the '80s and early '90s remained pretty much audio-only for most users. But a few hallmarks at those times pushed communications into the next decade.

One less-than-bright moment, though, was the earliest picture phones. Knowing about Nippon's and IBM's early prototypes in the 1980s, it's hard to picture what Mitsubishi must have been thinking when its still-frame picture phone debuted later in the decade. Don't remember it? You're not alone: The product was a blip on the teleconference map. Consumers were underwhelmed, and the product was pulled two years later.

IBM again introduced an innovative conferencing services solution in '91 with its black-and-white PicTel, a program for PCs. At $20,000 for the system and a relatively reasonable $30 per hour usage, it represented great strides in accessibility, as well. That offering was overshadowed in a matter of months by DARTnet, which connected an IP network over several continents. Users now know DARTnet as CAIRN.

Coming up: The 1990s witnesses a boom in telecommunications.
